A political storm is brewing within the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Plateau State over the 2027 governorship race, with growing tensions between the camp of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and the group referred to as the “Legacy group.” The division has raised concerns about the party’s unity and electoral prospects.

The crisis became more visible following recent protests in Angwan Rukuba and a world press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Jos, by a group of concerned stakeholders. The protesters alleged irregularities in the Jos North North APC primaries, claiming that the candidate who came fourth was given the ticket.

According to information circulating in public circles, the individual who emerged first in the Jos North North primaries is said to be aligned with Governor Mutfwang’s camp. The development, stakeholders say, has not gone down well with some party chieftains and has further widened the rift within the state APC.

Several political observers who spoke on the matter described the situation as unhealthy for both the party and democratic stability in Plateau. They called for urgent steps to “still the storm” to avoid what they termed a major danger for President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the state ahead of 2027.

Some stakeholders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, warned that the ongoing internal struggle amounts to a “political coup” against Governor Mutfwang. They cautioned that if the disagreements are not resolved and full support is not rallied behind the Governor’s re-election bid, the PDP could capitalize on the division and take advantage in 2027.

The concern was linked to alleged alliances being forged by some APC members with PDP candidates. The stakeholders argued that such realignments, if left unchecked, could jeopardize the party’s chances and hand victory to the opposition.

Others described the situation as “political suicide” for the APC on the Plateau if unity is not restored. They urged party leaders to prioritize reconciliation and collective interest over personal ambitions to prevent a repeat of past electoral misfortunes.

Despite the turbulence, supporters of Governor Mutfwang have called on him not to be distracted. They urged him to remain focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Plateau State, noting that the people stand with him amid what they described as political betrayal within some ranks of the APC.

“As it stands, there couldn’t be any better governor than Mutfwang among those contesting for the governorship position in Plateau State,” one stakeholder said. The group emphasized that unity and stability within the APC remain critical if the party hopes to retain the state in 2027.
