The political space in Plateau State is charged with tension ahead of the 2027 general elections, as sources indicate that divisions among major political gladiators are threatening party unity and governance in the state.
Stakeholders say the current wave of political betrayal is largely driven by power play and unresolved interests. Many have called on the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, to work closely with Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to ensure the delivery of both the Governor and President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
However, others allege that the anger and rifts from the 2023 elections continue to affect relations between the Mutfwang camp and the group referred to as the “Legacy group,” with Professor Nentawe allegedly caught in the middle. Some observers describe the recent political storm as an “internal coup” aimed at undermining the Governor’s capacity to govern and secure a second term.
Analysts attribute the recent developments to disagreements and conflict of interest among the state’s political heavyweights. There are also allegations that some APC candidates eyeing elective positions in 2027 may abandon Governor Mutfwang to protect their own interests.
Concerns have also been raised over alleged “double-face” politics within government. It is claimed that some political appointees in Governor Mutfwang’s cabinet are playing dual roles, with loyalties divided between the Governor and Prof. Nentawe and the Legacy group.
The recent public complaints about the underperformance of some appointees have been linked to this internal division. The development has raised fresh questions about who is truly in control of the APC structure in Plateau and who the recognized political leader of the party in the state is.
Political observers warn that the division is not healthy for the state, especially as the 2027 elections approach. They caution that the ongoing crisis could negatively impact President Tinubu’s electoral prospects in Plateau if not urgently addressed.
The situation is also said to be giving an advantage to Chief Kefas Ropshik, popularly known as “Kefiano.” Analysts note that his perceived closeness to the APC National Chairman, who hails from the same senatorial zone, has fueled speculation of a possible alliance to position him for the 2027 governorship race.
Many stakeholders are now calling on Professor Nentawe to set aside differences and prioritize unity for the progress of the state. They stressed that delivering President Tinubu in 2027 will require a strong political alliance in Plateau. Supporters of the administration maintain that both Governor Mutfwang and President Tinubu have performed creditably, and that recent social media attacks accusing the Governor of underperformance are being driven by elements from the Legacy group who opposed him in 2023.
